Job description

Companion Group is an esteemed AAA co-development gaming studio with a globally distributed and fully remote setup, renowned for its adeptness in overcoming the most intricate challenges in multiplayer game development. Our reputation precedes us as the primary choice for clients aspiring to elevate their latest multiplayer titles, enabling scalability in player numbers, maximising player density, and crafting immersive gameplay experiences.

Embedded seamlessly within a client's in-house team, we collaborate harmoniously to turn dreams into reality. Our portfolio boasts groundbreaking games developed in collaboration with major studios worldwide. As a fully remote studio with colleagues across the globe, we value and emphasise clear, continuous and transparent communication as highly as technical skills.

We’re looking for a Senior Technical Designer to join our growing team. This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a hands-on technical environment, enjoys working with Unreal Engine and game data, and wants to shape core gameplay systems in a collaborative and fast-moving setting.

Unlike pure systems analysis roles, this position requires a highly technical, hands-on approach, working directly within Unreal Engine, designing and implementing game mechanics, balancing in game systems, and handling data driven gameplay elements. If you’re passionate about game mechanics, economy balancing, and optimizing data workflows, this is your chance to make an impact.

Job requirements

Responsibilities

  • Work directly in Unreal Engine, implementing, tuning, and balancing game systems such as economy, progression, combat, AI behavior, and player interactions.

  • Develop core gameplay mechanics and systemic interactions, ensuring they are scalable, balanced, and engaging.

  •  Handle data tables, data assets, and Unreal’s struct-based data pipelines, ensuring smooth integration between gameplay logic and balancing efforts.

  • Implement and refine game logic using Blueprints, with a strong understanding of scripting workflows, debugging, and optimization techniques.

  • Work extensively with Excel to structure, analyze, and import/export game data efficiently. Use macros, pivot tables, and automation techniques to manage game economies, progression models, and system interactions.

  • Work closely with game designers, engineers, and level designers to ensure seamless implementation of systems within levels and gameplay loops.

  • Assist in setting up in-game data tracking, understanding how to capture and analyze player behavior, and iterating on designs based on metrics.

Skills:

  • Highly proficient with Unreal Engine. Must have hands-on experience developing gameplay systems, working with Blueprints, data assets, and system balancing.

  • Strong experience working with large datasets, automation (macros), and structuring/importing data into Unreal Engine.

  • Experience designing and tuning gameplay mechanics, progression systems, player-driven interactions, and in-game economies.

  • Ability to troubleshoot gameplay systems, optimize workflows, and ensure data integrity across pipelines.

  • Ideally, you’ve worked on a shipped title, but experience on a dev team or strong personal projects demonstrating technical ability is acceptable.

Bonus Skills:

  • Experience working with dynamic game elements and designing levels with systemic interactions.

  • Understanding of in-game economy balance, systemic modeling, and data-driven progression mechanics.

  • Familiarity with SQL, Google Sheets APIs, or other data management tools.

  • Experience profiling and optimizing gameplay systems for performance across different platforms.

  • Having gone through submission and live release cycles is a plus.

Rewards:

  • Competitive salary range of £45,000 - £60,000 (GBP)

  • Clear career progression path with opportunities for advancement, increased responsibilities, and compensation.

  • Fully remote position, allowing flexibility to work from any location while collaborating with industry-leading game developers.

  • Access to mentorship and guidance from experienced professionals in the gaming industry.

  • Opportunity to be part of a passionate and dynamic team working on exciting projects.
